That’s How the Light Gets In
Artist Statement - Stuart Wiscombe
This painting was inspired by Leonard Cohen’s
song, Anthem, from the 1992 album, The Future.
One of his most beautiful and hopeful songs in a tumultuous period. The chorus says:
“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in”.
The wedge-tailed eagle is representative of temporal power and the confidence of mankind. Confidence, that as we have witnessed, can so easily be shaken by the forces of Nature. It’s in such dark times that cultural endeavours like music, poetry and visual art become more significant, providing the enlightenment needed to interpret painful events in a wider context.
The dramatic atmospheric background was based on a photograph by Sorin Petculesco, with his permission.

Progress of my latest painting
My wife and I decided to create a cheeky magpie photograph with the help of our friendly local magpie called "Hoppy" who we tempted with some croissants and jam. The image was actually two images which have been stitched together with "Hoppy" starring in both images.
